“Homecoming is a celebration of the rich history of Hillside high school,” Nelda Caddell, a veteran sixth-year Homecoming sponsor, said.
A great deal of planning goes into both Spirit Week and Homecoming, starting with planning during the summer retreat, to development in the first days of school, up to the current implemental stage.
Clubs are sent invitations to participate in Spirit Week and the Pep Rally. Only a fraction of clubs who are given invitations choose to participate, Ms. Caddell said.
The Student Government Association works with students, clubs and teachers to develop the Spirit Week leading up to the Homecoming game. This year’s Homecoming game was held on Oct. 14 against Riverside High. Hillside triumphed, winning by a score of 50 to 7.
Dating back to the ‘70’s, Homecoming has been a student-centered event. “It’s also an opportunity to invite HS alumni back,” Ms. Caddell said.
